Hotel hits £3.6m revenue in six months

A North Yorkshire hotel, spa and country estate has revealed a record six-month trading period, with a turnover of £3,6m for the first six months of this year.

The Coniston Hotel Country Estate and Spa, near Skipton, employs 200 staff and is set to post a record financial year of £7.9m, from April 2017 to March 2018 – a 10% growth on the previous year. The business says that staycations are proving popular with customers.

More than 16,000 guests have stayed in the first half of the year – with 1,629 portions of fish and chips sold, 11,500 gin and tonic poured and 500 new spa members signed up.

The Coniston, which is owned by the Bannister family, opened a brand new £2.4m spa in late 2015 overlooking The Coniston Estate and 24-acre lake, creating 24 jobs. In 2016, it opened and launched The Thack, a luxury holiday cottage for up to ten guests.

Nick Bannister, director, said: “Over the past six months we have further invested into our hotel rooms, undertaken several refurbishment programmes across the hotel and completed a Wi-Fi upgrade.

“We’re always striving and investing to make The Coniston one of the north of England’s top country resorts. This team-wide commitment to improvement helps delight our customers and enhances our reputation which has resulted in this record growth.”

Louise Bolton, managing director of The Coniston, added: “It’s great to be part of a wider Yorkshire effort to bring more visitors to the Yorkshire Dales.

“Business has never been better in terms of occupancy rates. The staycation market continues to be strong and we have seen growth in our international customer base from both tourists and corporates.

The Coniston is planning a series of further investments over the next six months including enhancing its entrance and car park, bedroom refurbishments, developments to its 4×4 track, as well as senior hires across key departments.
