Multi-million-pound town improvement plans move forward

Plans to improve parts of the centre of Grimsby have been approved by the council’s Cabinet.

North East Lincolnshire Council bid for £3.682m from the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (Humber LEP) to undertake works in the town, which will be matched with £450,000 of council funding.

Through the programme, and associated investment, it is expected that around 222 jobs will be created on the back of around £30m of private sector investment.

Work will be delivered by March 2020 and is focused on four areas: Riverhead Square, Cartergate, St James Square and Town Hall Square.

It includes infrastructure and public realm works to provide a pedestrian link between Riverhead Square and Alexandra Dock to support the £20m cinema/leisure development at Riverhead Square.  At Town Hall Square there will be an extension of the public realm improvements in Osborne Street to Town Hall Square to enhance the amenity of the area and increase vibrancy .

Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for the economy, said: “We have recently completed some landmark projects in the town centre and have had complementary investment from the private sector. Along with our partners, and our joint working on the Greater Grimsby Town Deal, there are some important projects in planning which will make a significant difference to our town centre.”

Lord Haskins, chair of the Humber LEP, said:  “This additional Growth Deal investment to support Grimsby town centre’s regeneration will help to secure further private sector investment and jobs for the town.  North East Lincolnshire Council put forward a strong case for this funding and the LEP Board was pleased to back their plans.”
