Plans submitted for second phase of city centre development

A planning application for the second and final phase of a non-student city centre residential development in Sheffield has been submitted.

Designed by CODA Architecture for property developer Knight Knox, Great Central Phase 2 contains 92 studios and one/two/three-bedroom apartments, one commercial unit with associated parking and landscaped resident’s courtyard.

Located on the corner of Chatham Street and Mowbray Street, the Great Central development creates a landmark building at the gateway to Neepsend in the popular Kelham Island area.

Great Central Phase 1 gained planning permission back in November 2017. It is anticipated that construction for phase 1 will start on site in March and will create around 100 construction jobs.

Matt Bowker of CODA Architecture said: “Kelham Island and Sheffield City Centre are being transformed by new residential development, but a lot of what has been brought forward to date has been purpose built for students. Great Central has been designed with professionals, couples, families and downsizers in mind and will allow these people to take advantage of the buzzing new community in Kelham Island.”

Adam Murray of CODA Planning added: “As always, prior to submitting this application we’ve engaged closely and positively with the Council through the pre-application process to justify and enhance the scheme. We’re now confident that due to these conversations the planning process will be smooth and we will gain planning permission for the second phase of what is promising to be an exceptional development.”
