My Yorkshire: Andrew Bradley, of Shulmans LLP

Andrew Bradley is a Partner and Head of Corporate Finance at Shulmans LLP, a corporate law firm in Leeds.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I grew up mainly in Lancashire but spent some of my childhood in York. I have lived in Ilkley for over 20 years and much prefer the Yorkshire countryside and working in Leeds, but I don’t tell my friends across the border about that!

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

My favourite place in Yorkshire is Fountains Abbey. It holds a special place in my heart as it’s the place where I proposed to my wife.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

When I’m not working, one of my favourite things to do is go walking. I’d love to visit The Yorkshire Sculpture Park and see the amazing sculptures as well as enjoy the fantastic views of the countryside.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

Surprisingly – a beef suet pie washed down with a pint of beer one lunchtime at the Angel in Hetton. It was with an old friend who was very poorly at the time and who sadly passed away much too young. For me memorable food and drink is dictated by the surroundings, the occasion and whom you are with, as much as by what is consumed.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

Telling people that “It’s God’s own county!”

Favourite piece of trivia about the region?

The tallest ever Englishman, William Bradley (no relation) came from Yorkshire and was known as the “Yorkshire Giant” (7ft 9ins tall).

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

David Hockney.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

The worst thing is we tend to undersell the region. We have great countryside, history and events (the Tour de Yorkshire is my favourite as a cycling fan). We should be making more noise about how it’s a great thing to live and work here.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

Manchester Airport.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

I don’t think there is anything overrated about Yorkshire, but as I’m originally from Lancashire, I would have to say that we have better pies across the border!
