Rushbond and Advent join forces for school scheme

WORK has started to transform an historic grade two-listed former school in York into a £5.5m housing development.

The Bootham Green scheme will see 38 new homes created at Shipton Street in Bootham.

The site is being developed in a partnership between Yorkshire-based developer Rushbond Group and Advent Developments.

The former school buildings will be restored and converted to create 24 townhouses together with 14 newly built contemporary designed homes.

Esh Construction has been appointed to carry out all building work which will be completed towards the end of the year.

Jonathan Maud, of Rushbond Group, said: “We’re delighted to start work on Bootham Green and have been inundated with positive feedback from the local community as well as potential home buyers and people who have links with the school.

“Everybody is thrilled to see this stunning building being protected and transformed to create some much needed quality housing so close to the City walls, as well as making a positive contribution to the environment and community.

York Councillor Ken King joined representatives from the developers on site to officially start construction work.

Coun King said: “The Shipton Street School was a much loved part of the community and countless York residents have very fond memories of their school years there.

“Many generations of local children have been educated in the school since it opened in 1890 so it is particularly exciting to see the conversion works now get underway.

“This is an important and exciting new development and I am personally delighted to officially start work converting these historic buildings. There’s no doubt this development will make a positive contribution to the local community as well as providing much needed new homes in this sought after part of York.”

The one to three bedroom homes are being marketed by York estate agents Hudson Moody and prices start from £125,000.
