£17m plans unveiled for landmark development’s second phase

THE developers behind the transformation of a landmark Sheffield building have announced plans for a £17m second phase.

Urban Splash says another 182 homes are planned for Sheffield’s Park Hill development, a Grade two listed building that was condemned in the 1980s.

Last year saw the first residents move in after the completion of the first phase and the first 79 apartments are now sold.

The building, which was given Grade two listed status by English Heritage in 1997 which prevented it from being knocked down, has 874 apartments in total.

Urban Splash expects the entire redevelopment to be delivered in five stages.

The first of the homes in this second phase are expected to be completed in a year’s time.

The flats were built following the second world war in the late 1950s and early 1960s to clear slums and were branded as a “home for heroes”.

However, the area soon became riddled with crime and drug problems.

The listing stopped Park Hill being bulldozed and allowed it to be taken over to transform it into a complex for the 21st century.

A piece of graffiti on one of the bridges besame a slogan used by the Arctic Monkeys on one of their US tours, with the phrase ‘I love you – will you marry me?’ used by the Sheffield band on a tour T-shirt.

The development made the shortlist for the 2013 Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture.
