Grade I-listed stately home acquired for £7m

Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham

A CONSERVATION group has acquired one of the UK’s largest stately homes.

Wentworth House near Rotherham has been sold to SAVE Britain’s Heritage, under its Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust banner.

Coming in at 250,000 sq ft, the grade I listed building is one of the biggest in Europe.

Grants as well as £3.5m from the National Heritage Memorial Fund allowed the acquisition.

The organisation intends to preserve the house and grounds and open it to the public, as well as finding sympathetic uses for other parts of the site.

It will engage in fundraising activities to allow essential works and repairs.

The trustees of the new WWPT include The Duke of Devonshire, Lady Juliet Tadgell, Sir Philip Naylor-Leyland, Julie Kenny, Timothy Cooke, Martin Drury, and Merlin Waterson.
