Engineering business prosecuted after worker injury

SHEFFIELD engineering business has been prosecuted following an incident in which a worker became entangled in machinery.

Special Machine Products Ltd based on Bessemer Road was fined at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court a total of £57,107.

The court heard that on 1 October 2015, an employee at the company was entangled in a rotating metal bar. The bar was used to guard against debris exiting the machine.

His clothing was trapped in the rotating stop bar as he bent over to reach spare cutting tips, before becoming entangled in the machinery and suffering severe trauma to his lower left arm.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the incident found that the company had not identified the use of the stop bar in their risk assessment.
