Cyber attack hits telecoms firm

A CYBER attack has hit telecoms group KCOM, causing customers to lost internet access.

The Hull-based company said that since Saturday 26 November a “significant” number of customers have been experiencing connectivity issues.

The business has now said this was due to a cyber attack targeting vulnerability in certain broadband routers.

It said this caused them to crash and disconnect from the network. The router is specifically the ZyXel AMG1302-T10B.

KCOM said its core network was not affected at the time and that it has put measures in place to block future attacks affecting customers. A software update can be applied remotely to the affected routers – customers will not need to do anything.

It said a small percentage of its customers with affected routers may need additional support and the company is in the process of contacting them. It said it was not limited to KCOM customers and that it had notified Ofcom.
