Nottingham gets green light for International College

No. 1 Nottingham Science Park

An international college which teaches overseas students English is set to come to Nottingham.

Planning permission has been granted by Nottingham City Council to change No.1 Nottingham Science Park from office space to a new college. The move will see Kaplan International Colleges (KIC) take 16,455 sq ft of space in partnership with the University of Nottingham to create The University of Nottingham International College.

Some 52 jobs will be created at the new college.

KIC is part of Kaplan Inc., an international provider of educational and careers services.

KIC already has investments in Nottingham. Backed by Kaplan’s parent company – Graham Holdings, KIC committed more than £30m over a 15-year period to build Global Point in Nottingham City Centre in partnership with Nottingham Trent University. Global Point opened in September 2014 and provides 449 en-suite rooms to students.

Students at the proposed KIC will become Associate members of The University of Nottingham. This permits them to use all of The University of Nottingham campus facilities such as the library, catering and union facilities.

Two degree programmes will be available; a pre-undergraduate degree programme for 16-22 year olds and a pre-postgraduate degree programme for 21-32 year olds.

JLL submitted the planning application on behalf of KIC. In a letter to Joanna Briggs of Nottingham City Council seen by TheBusinessDesk.com, JLL’s planning consultant Ravinder Bains said: “The primary purpose of the International College is to prepare international students for progression on to undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes at The University of Nottingham, including STEM degrees.

“It is important for both Kaplan and The University of Nottingham that students are able to experience life on the University campus and have an overall positive student experience to ensure students choose to stay in the City and progress to The University of Nottingham rather than progressing to other universities in the UK.”

Nottingham Science Park Park is owned by Nottingham City Council and has Enterprise Zone status.
