This week’s East Midlands news: Deals – the good, the bad and the ugly

This week’s best-read stories were firmly entrenched in the good, old deals market. Sometimes it’s what you know that makes the most enjoyable reads, after all.

Top of the pile was Syston-based homewares giant Dunelm which bought a struggling online rival out of administration in a deal worth £8.5m.

Dunelm has bought WS Group, which trades as WorldStores and which is backed by Goldman Sachs.

The WS Group consists of Worldstores, Worldstores Kiddicare and Achica.

Those in the know say this could be a canny deal for Dunelm as it looks to expands it footprint and range.

In second place this week was the news that Loughborough-based Intelligent Energy has called off a £1.2bn deal to provide energy to over 27,400 telecom towers in India has fallen through after talks with funders collapsed. With Intelligent Energy struggling, it’ll be interesting to see how this affects the listed firm.

Our third most-read centres around John Lowe and Nathan Jones or FRP Advisory bring appointed administrators of stricken Greenberry Engineering Services based on Quibells Lane in Newark. The firm has been trading since 1971 and carries out all aspects of engineering work from the design and installations of factory layouts to prototyping of small components. Let’s hope there’s a happy outcome to this tale.
