Boost for Derby as Local Plan gets green light

Derby City Council’s local plan to boost housing, jobs and trade by 2028 has been given the go-ahead by an independent planning inspector, appointed by the Secretary of State for Department of Culture and Local Government.

The Derby City Local Plan – Part 1 Core Strategy, provides a plan on how the city will look over the next 11 years.

It earmarks places where new homes can be built and setting new areas where new businesses can be established.

The Council received the Inspector’s report on 5th December, confirming that the Derby City Local Plan – Part 1 Core Strategy is sound and can be adopted.

Derby City Councillor Martin Rawson, deputy leader and cabinet member for communities and city centre regeneration, said: “We are very proud that our city is home to some of the world’s most prestigious businesses including Bombardier and Rolls-Royce – that Derby is surrounded by breath-taking countryside and is a great place to shop or spend your leisure time.

“The Derby City Local Plan – Part 1 Core Strategy provides our best opportunity to meet the city’s existing needs and future for growth and expansion – yet retain the qualities that make Derby such a special place.

“It allows us to identify key sites where homes can be built and where companies can expand to increase employment opportunities. It also allows us to protect what matters the most to us, our open spaces, our Green Wedges, our historic buildings and our conservation areas.

Councillor Rawson added: “We have engaged with local communities through consultation to understand their aspirations for their hometown and to balance this with our Core Strategy plans.

“We are very pleased the Planning Inspectorate approved our Core Strategy as it means that development can be rolled out responsibly in the right way and in the right place.”
