Original Viyella factory could be turned into flats

A Nottingham developer has lodged plans with the City Council to turn the original Viyella factory in residential complex.
Mabec wants to turn Radford Mills in the city into a five storey building with a seven storey tower that will be home to 277 separate apartments and 470 bedrooms.
The development is being designed by Franklin Ellis. In the planning applications, the Nottingham architecture practice says: “The development is not solely for students use, but the location, between the two universities, suggest that site will be of interest to this group when starting their relationship with the city of Nottingham, and a proportion of the site naturally lends itself to satisfy the needs of this sector.
“Accommodation suitable to the needs of the young professional, couple and families is on offer, meaning that people can live at the site and over time move to different type of accommodation as their relationship with the city and their personal circumstance and/or budget allow.”
The firm adds: “The development brings back into use a valuable and distinctive building of local interest and regenerates a brown field site which has remained derelict for decades.
“The development reflects a significant investment into this part of Nottingham which, in turn, is likely to be a catalyst for future investment in the area.”
Radford Mill was built in Victoria times and at one stage was used to make Spitfire engines, according to Mabec. Viyella ceased trading from the Mill in the 1960s.
