Plans revealed for 35,000 sq ft Leicester mixed-use scheme

Plans by a Leicestershire developer to turn the Carron Building on Rutland Street in Leicester into a mixed-used development have been submitted to the City Council.

Moorhouse Construction wants to turn the building into an office and restaurant and cafe scheme, in a move that will create 35 full- and part-time jobs.

The building, a former mill, has been vacant for a number of years.

Plans drawn up by MAS Architecture show a change of use of the lower ground and ground floor of the building into retail, while the first, second and third floors would be office space. A two-storey roof extension is planned, which would also be office accommodation.

A planning statement from MAS reads: “The redevelopment will provide a purpose to a building that has incredible value, yet one that has not been used in a number of years, in an attempt to make the best of and most efficient use of an exisiting building.

“The proposals will also support and enhance existing business activities in the immediate vicinity and will act as a catalyst for future regeneration projects in the area.”

In January this year Leicester City Council approved £18,000 of match-funding to help kick-start the redevelopment of the Carron Buildings as part of ongoing work to encourage the reuse of empty buildings in the area.

Ian Moorhouse, managing director of Moorhouse Construction, said: “We are very much focused on developing the Carron Building. The financial support of the council, as well as the valued advice and help offered, has made it possible for us to begin the design and planning work on this very exciting project.”
