Plans submitted for £58m City Hub campus

Nottingham College's new City Hub

A planning application has been submitted by Nottingham College to Nottingham City Council for the development of its new £58m flagship city centre campus to be open in September 2020

The development of the new 166,603 sq ft City Hub on Canal Street has the backing of the City Council and the D2N2 LEP and will be designed by Bond Bryan Architects.

It is hoped work will start on site in June 2018, and will be ready to open to students and around 250 staff in September 2020.

The City Hub forms part of the £250m Southern Gateway regeneration scheme, spearheaded by Nottingham City Council involving the redevelopment of the intu Broadmarsh Centre, the rebuild of the Broadmarsh bus station and car park, as well as the remodelling of road and pedestrian routes in the area.

The new campus will provide college and community facilities, together with a new business hub.

Matt Hutton, chief architect on the project from Bond Bryan, said: “As an architect, it’s important to capture and understand the heritage of a particular site and having grown up in Nottingham, I’m familiar with the stories of Broadmarsh and Narrow Marsh.

“The opportunity to transform an area that was once synonymous with poverty and limited life chances into a centre that will help unlock the potential of tens of thousands of young people in the coming years, is a very rewarding prospect.

“The City Hub project has an ability to create an exciting destination for local businesses and education to mix, providing real benefit to skills and employment in the region. It is an exciting time for Nottingham and I’m extremely proud to be part of it.”

John van de Laarschot, Nottingham College chief executive said: “It is our aspiration to bring to Nottingham something truly iconic, something that does not simply fit the mould of a traditional college campus, but which provides a unique space in which business and education co-exist and the relationship between the two can be strengthened.

“The City Hub, and the services it will house, will provide real benefits to employers and students. When we put this Hub together with the College’s plans for its other Centres for Excellence across the city, we will be one of the biggest and best-resourced training and skills institutions in the country.”
