Work set to start on £16.4m museum
Derby Museums is ready to begin work on a £16.4m project to transform Derby’s Silk Mill museum into a world class attraction.
Derby’s Silk Mill building stands on the site of the world’s first factory and is part of the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
The project has received funding from a number of sources including a £9.4m investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), a £2.5m contribution from Arts Council England (ACE) and £3.7m via the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, in addition to £350,000 from Derby City Council, and £228,700 from Partner Museum Funding Trusts.
The new ‘Museum of Making’ will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history, celebrating the makers of the past; and will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities and is scheduled to open in July 2020.
