East Mids the most dangerous place to work in UK

Workers in the East Midlands are 24% more likely to suffer accidents at work compared to the rest of the country, according to research from payroll and HR firm Moorepay.

Chances of suffering an accident in the region were 371 per 100,000 workers, compared to a national average of just 301. This represents an additional 1,607 people injured over the course of the year.

The East Midlands is ranked as the worst region in the UK for employee injuries, with the West Midlands only faring marginally better with a 341 per 100,000 workers, while the South East was the safest place for workplace accidents – with a 237 per 100,000 workers (36% less than the East Midlands).

In the region, Blaby and Daventry saw the most accidents per 100,000 workers, with 792 (over double the national average) and 677 respectively. The safest area in the region was Broxtowe, with just 176 injuries per 100,000 workers.

“No region wants the reputation as the UK’s most dangerous place to work, but unfortunately the case for the East Midlands is very strong,” said Phil Barker, head of health and safety services at Moorepay. “Employers and employees must be made aware of the number of health and safety risks and workplace injuries.”

“Workplace health and safety must be of paramount importance to organisations. They have an obligation to provide a safe working environment and minimise risk. This starts by having a clear process in place, with regular risk assessments at the very least,” added Barker.
