Former pub to be turned into indoor market

How the market will look

The transformation of a former Coalville pub into an indoor market has started.

Scaffolding has been put up on the former Litten Tree pub on Marlborough Square, which North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) bought last month as part of its Building Confidence in Coalville regeneration programme.

Once work is complete, a new indoor market will be created, with existing stalls from the current market hall being joined by other traders.

Regular outdoor markets will be held just outside the new indoor space once the planned redesign of Marlborough Square is complete and there will be the opportunity for events to be held inside and out.

The roof repairs will help to bring the old pub up to modern building standards and will take between two and four weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

Some £600,000 has been allocated by the council for the purchase and revamp of the building.

Existing market traders are being supported to move into the new indoor market, onto the new outdoor market or into suitable retail space in the town. Grants and free business advice is available to these traders.

The council also hopes to offer the opportunity for new businesses and start-ups to trade at the revamped indoor market as part of its plans to regenerate the town.
