Rugby Club sells historic home

Peel Croft

Burton Rugby Football Club (BRFC) has sold the Lichfield Street site it has called home since the 1910s.

Peel Croft has been sold to an un-named retailer for an undisclosed sum.

The club will complete its current season at Peel Croft in April 2020 before relocating to a site at Tatenhill. The club has spent around £2 million developing its new ground over the last 18 months.

Colin Grimsdell, chairman of development for BRFC, said: “For a long time, we have been working on this project to bring our fantastic club together on one site, with modern facilities that the ever-growing membership needs and deserves. The sale of Peel Croft has provided the majority of the funds needed to complete the development of the new location at Tatenhill and will enable men, women, boys and girls, of all abilities and ages, to play sport in a safe and supportive environment.”

Else Solictors’ head of commercial property Neil Etherington acted on behalf of the club’s trustees to secure the sale.

He said: “Since roughly 1910, the Peel Croft site on Lichfield Street has been an undeniable part of the clubs long and rich history in the centre of Burton. The successful sale of the site for retail development marks a turning point in preparing for the future of the club at their new premises on Branston Road.”

BRFC will use some of the proceeds from the sale to build a new clubhouse, which will include multi-changing facilities for boys and girls, a bar, an additional corporate function room and extensive kitchen facilities.
