Discount retailer to open 1.3m sq ft Leicestershire logistics hub

Warwickshire-based discount retailer Aldi says it wants to create 2,000 jobs next year as part of a £1.3bn investment plan.

The German-owned retail giant will add 100 stores to its portfolio as well as a 1.3m sq ft logistics hub in Leicestershire.

The news come as profits fell as the firm by 2.5% to £264.8m last year, but sales hit a new record of £13.51bn.

Aldi has already created 7,000 jobs over the last two years and has an estate of 920 stores.

Giles Hurley, chief executive Officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Whilst 2020 was an extremely challenging year, our 41,000 colleagues stepped up when it mattered most – their dedication to the communities they serve has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite some of the most difficult conditions our sector has ever seen, our people underlined the strength, success and spirit of our business.”
