Kia set to open 40,000 sq ft training academy in Derby

St. Modwen Park Derby

UK logistics developer St. Modwen Logistics has leased a 40,000 sq ft unit to global automotive company Kia.

This unit will serve as a training academy for the future workforce of Kia.

Kia is the most recent global business to establish an educational centre at St. Modwen Park Derby.

This follows Swedish Medical technology manufacturer Getinge, which announced plans in February 2023 to create a Global Centre of Excellence for Chemistry and establish its UK headquarters at the park.

Kia will take possession by the end of 2023 after customising the unit.

The facility is equipped with electric vehicle charging ports, LED lighting, smart metering, and an on-site fitness trail.

Customisations by Kia include additional power installations to facilitate advanced training in electrification and STEM subjects.

Paul Philpott, CEO of Kia UK Limited, said: “We are thrilled to bring our new and enhanced Kia Academy to Derby. This move represents our commitment to supporting STEM education, driving electrification and helping our dealer partners build the workforce and skills they need for the future. Our investment in the new training Academy showcases our unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation and sustainability while solidifying Kia’s position as a leader in electrification and the automotive industry.”

Earlier this year, St. Modwen Logistics revealed its intentions to invest £59 million in a second phase of development at the park.

This expansion will result in the creation of approximately 350,000 sq ft of modern warehouse space by the end of 2024.
