Green light for £300m prison in Leicestershire

The proposed plan for HMP Gartree 2 prison

The Government has approved the construction of a new Category B super prison in Leicestershire with a budget of £300m.

Despite the planning inspector’s suggestion to reject the proposal for the 1,700-inmate HMP Gartree 2 prison, Michael Gove, Secretary for Levelling Up and Housing, has given the green light.

The decision was based on the perceived pressing demand for modern prison facilities, job creation, and biodiversity benefits, which were considered more significant than concerns related to the local development plan restrictions.

During the construction phase, approximately 100 jobs are expected to be created, contributing over £70m to the local economy.

Builder Wates is likely to be selected for the construction of the planned prison adjacent to HMP Gartree, near Market Harborough.

The prison design comprises seven four-storey housing blocks, each accommodating around 245 prisoners, two large workshops, and a central services hub.

The Ministry of Justice argues that the construction of six new prisons, including Gartree, is necessary to address the demand, emphasising that the current system operates at 97.5% capacity.
