Nottingham duo compete for spot on Aldi shelves

Gavin Youngson and Sarah Gaunt

Sarah Gaunt and Gavin Youngson, owners of company Rootiful, are set to make an appearance on Channel 4’s ‘Aldi’s Next Big Thing’ airing on Tuesday, May 7th at 8 pm.

The duo is the driving force behind Rootiful, a company that specialises in a fresh approach to tofu, utilising British-grown peas, quinoa, lentils, and pulses instead of soy.

Rootiful’s offerings come in four varieties including Tikka lentil, Sriracha quinoa, BBQ pea, and Naked (unflavored), all boasting high protein and fibre content.

Hosted by author and broadcaster Anita Rani, alongside Chris Bavin from BBC’s The One Show and Eat Well for Less, the six-part series will feature suppliers across various categories, including dinners and baked goods and food and drink suppliers compete to be listed in over 1,000 Aldi stores nationwide.

Additionally, viewers can anticipate the introduction of three new categories: party, world, and confectionery.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “What’s exciting about this category is the creativity and ingenuity we see. In terms of trends, there’s gut health, menopause support, plus advances in plant-based products and functional foods and drinks. We’re looking for something that ticks the box of healthy and nutritious but also has all the flavour and innovation that our customers love.”
