Demolition begins for Grimsby’s Freshney Place revamp

Demolition work has begun on the former Top Town Market in Grimsby, marking a milestone in the redevelopment of Freshney Place Shopping Centre.

The project aims to transform the centre into a multi-use retail and leisure hub and will offer a range of attractions, including a new Parkway multi-screen cinema, a market hall, and a food and shopping venue.

The redevelopment is part of a broader investment plan and stands as one of the largest investments by North East Lincolnshire County Council in Grimsby’s town centre.

It is expected to stimulate further investment, boost the success of current tenants, and create exciting opportunities for new businesses.

Preparatory work, including the removal of asbestos and deconstruction of mechanical systems, has already been completed.

GMI Construction Group, the main contractor for the project, will now begin the structural demolition phase.

Dave Fish, project manager at GMI said: “We’ve completed the soft strip phase and are now entering the main demolition. Everything is on track, and we’re coordinating carefully to ensure safety and minimal disruption as we prepare for the next stages.”

Paul Sargent, founder of Queensberry, the project’s development and asset manager said: “This is a pivotal moment for Grimsby. The redevelopment will revitalise the town centre, attract investment, and create a sustainable future for the area. It’s a great opportunity for brands to invest in an up-and-coming location.”
