Travel update: Bridge collapse shuts train line in Leicestershire

Commuters on trains between Loughborough and Leicester are looking at severe delays this morning after a bridge collapsed at Barrow upon Soar.

East Midlands trains says the incident is severely disrupting its trains on the London St Pancras/Nottingham/Leicester and the Leicester/Lincoln/Grimsby routes.

Network Rail teams have been working through the night to remove the debris from the railway in an effort to re-open the line. At present East Midlands Trains says it does not expect the line to open today (2 August).

A statement from the company said: “The line is currently closed and all of our trains on the route cannot run in either direction between Leicester and Loughborough. This means that there will be no direct train services between London St Pancras and stations north of Leicester. There will be severe disruption and a significantly reduced service running between Leicester and London St Pancras.

“At present we do not expect the line to re-open fully today.”

East Midlands Trains says its services are not able to run between Loughborough and Leicester. Commuters must use alternative routes:

Sheffield/Chesterfield to London Kings Cross via Doncaster.
Derby to/from London Euston via Birmingham.
Nottingham to/from London Kings Cross via Grantham.

A replacement bus service is running in both directions between Leicester and East Midlands Parkway. This is only for customers travelling to/from Leicester, Syston, Sileby, Barrow upon Soar and Loughborough.
