BBC documentary set to unwrap Derbyshire sweet maker

The Derbyshire base of Britain’s largest family-owned sweet manufacturer Swizzels has opened its doors to BBC Two’s Inside the Factory series.

Swizzels, one of the few sweet manufacturers to still produce in the UK, features in the show which goes behind the scenes to unveil the secrets of Britain’s biggest factories.

The hour long programme, airing today at 8pm (August 23rd), will show presenters Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey exploring the inner workings of the Derbyshire based factory, which produces over one million individual sweets every 24 hours. The programme will show how the 500 employees and high-tech machinery work together at the factory to produce the vast range of sweet products from Love Hearts to Drumstick Lollies.

Jeremy Dee, managing director at Swizzels, said: “We were delighted to welcome the BBC team into our factory in New Mills, Derbyshire. We have been manufacturing here since 1940 and are extremely proud of our British heritage.

“During their three days with us, Gregg and Cherry rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into pressing Fizzers, making Drumstick chews and wrapping Double Lollies.

“We gave them a full tour of the factory so they could get an understanding of all the different processes we have in place to produce our huge range of products, from our classic Refresher chew bars and Parma Violets to one of our more recent creations, Squashies.”

Swizzels produces iconic sweets including Love Hearts, Drumstick Lollies, Parma Violets and Squashies.
