Clegg praises Stockport’s efforts

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg was shown Stockport”s plans for the Grand Central town centre regeneration scheme for the borough during a visit last Friday.
The council recently paid £15m to acquire the town centre site from rthe administrators of Targetfollow Property Holdings and is now planning a major office-led regeneration scheme to attract £100m worth of investment and 700 new jobs.
Mr Clegg was also shown the new St Paul’s Square development which is the home of a new Sky call centre, the redeveloped art deco Stockport Plaza cinema and the council’s own new civic complex.
Mr Clegg said: “Stockport is driving a remarkable renaissance which is benefiting everyone in the borough.
“Within half a mile of this outstanding Town Hall we can see benefits of international investment, culture and sport.
“This is a borough on the road to success and I congratulate Stockport thoroughly on all the achievements by the tremendous range of organisations working in partnership.”
Council leader Cllr Dave Goddard said: “Stockport is open for business. We are committed to working with people, as part of our Stockport Boost initiative, whether they are from the private sector, the public sector or our wonderful volunteers to keep improving life for people here.
“I was born and brought up here, and am very proud of Stockport.”
