Councillors have given the go-ahead for a retirement living village in Burscough, which will deliver 48 one- and two-bed apartments for local older people.

In addition to the apartment building, the scheme will also offer 19 two-bed bungalows with their own parking and private gardens.

Retirement living developer, McCarthy Stone, had submitted its proposals to West Lancashire Borough Council.

The scheme will be available for private sale, as well as rent and part rent-part buy.

The site, which is located off Chancel Way at Yew Tree Farm, is situated close to Burscough town centre, with residents benefitting from excellent transport links close by and a range of local amenities on their doorstep.

This site is allocated within the West Lancashire Local Plan and forms part of the wider Yew Tree Farm Masterplan, which identifies this portion of the site as a suitable location for elderly housing provision.

The development, which has been designed to complement local architectural styles, is set amongst attractive landscaped gardens and on-site parking.

A range of communal amenities, including a residents’ lounge, will also help to boost the social lives of older residents living in the apartments.

Ian Wilkins, divisional managing director at McCarthy Stone, said: “Our exciting scheme will help to address a demand for retirement accommodation in the area, providing housing choice for older people, whilst freeing up the wider housing market for families and first-time buyers further down the chain.

“We’ve routinely found that residents moving into a McCarthy Stone residence experience increased independence and social interaction. This, along with other lifestyle changes, results in a significant improvement to health and wellbeing.”

McCarthy Stone will begin construction of the new development in the coming months.
