KDC’s £1m Scottish power job

DECOMMISSIONING  demolition and remediation contractor KDC is close to completing a A £1m project in Scotland.

The Manchester company’s growing Scottish operation has been decommissioning  three Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) tanks and pipelines at Peterhead Power Station.

KDC undertook the final cleaning and removal of a 2.5 km underground pipeline between the power station and tankers jetty. KDC was also responsible for the demolition of the tanks for onward recycling at the plant located near Peterhead.

Stephen Hardy, KDC energy, utilities and industrial sector director, said: “The power station prides itself on being one of the largest power stations in Scotland.

“We won the contract because we looked beyond the original scope of the project, and SSE liked our cost effective way of thinking.

“The project brief originally sought abandonment and removal of the pipelines, which of course we could do, but we suggested the tanks should be included too. We knew the scrap value from the demolition of the tanks for onward recycling would considerably offset the project costs.”

In July KDC announced plans to grow business in Scotland and opened a regional base in Grangemouth.

KDC works across a wide range of sectors including nuclear, energy and natural resources, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, utilities, the public sector, manufacturing and heavy industrial.  Clients include: BP, Magnox, Scottish Power and Wales & West Utilities.
