Top panel to debate retail’s challenges

A PANEL of key players in the retail sector will debate its prospects at an event organised by law firm JMW later this month.
Jacqueline Gold, the boss of lingerie Ann Summers will line up alongside Steve Whitehouse, commercial director at fast-growing Internet retailer The Hut Group and David Hughes, the outspoken founder of Allsports turned business author.
The firm’s Corporate Recovery and Insolvency conference, will take place at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel in Manchester on October 25.
Miss Gold has been regularly voted one of the UK’s most influential businesswomen, while David Hughes’ outspoken views and well-received 2011 book Dirty Business have made him one of retail’s most colourful entrepreneurs.
A year ago he correctly predicted the demise of JJB Sports, which recently went into administration with more than 2,000 job losses.
The conference will also feature top insolvency experts including BDO partner Dermot Power, who acted as joint administrator for Allied Carpets in 2009.
Richard Wolff, partner and head of corporate recovery and insolvency at JMW, said: “Most people would have to admit that times remain tough for the UK retail sector, and we continue to see and read about significant retail failures across the country on a regular basis.
“However, there have also been numerous examples of retailers bucking this trend dramatically and capitalising on the torrid climate to seize increased market share.”
