Peel unveils £1bn Trafford Waters vision

PEEL has announced plans for an ambitious £1bn mixed-use development called Trafford Waters.

The development, situated on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford, close to the Trafford Leisure Village and intu Trafford Centre, will be a sustainable urban neighbourhood,  featuring 3,000 apartments and 875,000sq ft of commercial space and leisure.

The company says its proposals will cost £1bn and create more than 5,000 jobs.

James Whittaker, development director at Peel Land & Property, said: “We have been working on the vision and masterplan for Trafford Waters for over 15 years.

“It will be an exemplar, sustainable development that will create a space for a new community to live, work and play. The strong links with the intu Trafford Centre and Trafford Leisure Village and unrivalled transport connections, including the Trafford Park Metrolink extension, will make Trafford Waters the place to be.

“I am delighted that we are able to present plans which, if approved, will help address housing need in the area and provide new business and employment opportunities, all while regenerating and enhancing a prominent but underused site in a fantastic waterfront location. I am confident that Trafford Waters will be an asset to the entire region.”

Trafford Waters will be linked to the intu Trafford Centre by a Green Bridge, providing residents, employees and visitors with easy access to the bus station and Metrolink stop.

A two-day public exhibition has been arranged so that members of the local community can find out more about the proposals. Members of the project team will be on hand to talk people through the scheme and answer questions. The exhibition will be at Venus, 1 Old Park Lane, Trafford Quays, Manchester, on Thursday March 19  from 3pm to 7pm and Saturday March 21 from 11am to 3pm.

Peel Land & Property has been advised by a project team that includes IBI Group for masterplanning and heritage, Gillespies for landscape architecture, TTHC for transport, NJL Consulting for planning, BWB Consulting for environmental assessment, Bureau Veritas for air quality, Hyder Cresswell for ecology, Amion for economic and social analysis, Low Carbon Design Consultants for energy and sustainability, CgMS for archaeology, Turner and Townsend for cost consultancy and Remarkable Engagement for public consultation and stakeholder engagement.
