Plastics recycling firm plans £3m investment

A BOLTON-based recycling firm has announced plans to create more than 30 new jobs as part of a £3m extension of its site.
Toughsheet Building Products is to open the building at its premises in Westhoughton to help fulfil increasing demand form customers following a major contract win with builders’ merchant Buildbase earlier this year. The company also works with Travis Perkins, B&Q And Jewsons and is on course for a turnover of £6.9m this year.
Toughsheet’s directors Doug and Rona Mercer have said that they will soon submit a planning application to Bolton Council. If approved, they hope to start work on the extension within the next few months.
The company recycles plastic waste and uses recycled materials to produce damp proof membrane. It employs 60 people at its Chequerbent Works site on Manchester Road.
“The new building and car parking would allow us to increase the amount of the products we currently produce but, more excitingly, produce new products from 100 per cent recycled materials,” said Doug Mercer.
“The area is designated green belt but in reality is a concrete wasteland. Our development in what has become known as a recycling community with a number of other businesses in the area would allow this land not only to be put to good use but, more importantly, to create jobs and help boost the local economy.
“We hope that our history as a long established family business in a sector which the government has committed to supporting as part of the green agenda will help us to get the go-ahead for our plans.”
The company has said that it is looking to achieve a turnover target of £10m within the next three years.
