£60m PFI waste contract awarded

VIRIDOR Laing has awarded a £60m waste processing plant contract to Enpure, as part of its PFI waste and recycling contract with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.

Finalised in April, the long awaited Greater Manchester Waste Private Finance Initiative, worth £3.8bn, is the largest PFI deal of its kind in Europe. Viridor is working jointly with John Laing on the 25-year contract to deliver the waste services to GMWDA.

This £60m deal is part of a £640m construction programme to provide a network of waste recycling facilities in the Greater Manchester area over the next five years.

The Birmingham-based environmental engineering company will supply two anaerobic Mechanical-Biological-Treatment processing plants.

The plants will treat around 173,000 tonnes each year of household waste, providing materials recycling, fuel production and also renewable electricity.

Malcolm Wilkinson, managing director of Enpure, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this prestigious waste contract, utilising our proven MBT technology and project delivery expertise”.
