Tetra Pak confirms 150 job losses with closure of Wrexham plant

CARTONS giant Tetra Pak has confirmed that it is to close a sheet-feeding plant in Wrexham, leading to 150 job losses.

The company announced that it had concluded an ongoing collective consultation process with staff that will lead to it closing the plant in April. Affected employees are now being consulted individually.

Rik Jacobs, managing director of Tetra Pak’s UK and Ireland operations, said: “The decision to consult on Wrexham’s future was an extremely difficult one, but was necessary to ensure the continued competitiveness of our business.

“Throughout the process, we have been committed to treating our affected employees with dignity and respect. We shall continue to do so and provide them with support in the coming months.

He said that the firm had agreed “equitable” severance packages for the unions with affected employees and is also providing re-training opportunities and making careers advice available.

“The decision does not alter our commitment to remain a leading employer in Wrexham. Our Wrexham site will continue to house our commercial operations for the UK & Ireland, employing around 115 people.

“Through the operation of a new finished good warehouse, we will also create 21 new jobs. This will better serve the UK and Irish markets and ensure we are in the right shape for future growth.”
