Everyman project gains European funding

THE Everyman and playhouse theatre in Liverpool has been granted £5.9m in European grants to help pay for its rebuilding.

The project has been granted the money from the European Regional Development Fund. It will allow for the construction of a new theatre with a modern, adaptable stage, better catering and front-of-house facilities and more room for rehearsal space and for ewducation and community facilities.

The North West Development Agency said that the completed project is expected to contribute 35 new jobs to Liverpool’s economy and safeguard a further 107 positions.

David Malpass, director of the European programme at the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), said: “The city of Liverpool is a major tourist attraction, so ensuring that we continue to provide visitors with exciting places to visit is essential.

“Developments to the Everyman and Playhouse theatre will not only ensure that visitors enjoy a quality venue, but it is also provide facilities for the local community to get involved, with professional training support available on site.”

Nick Brooks-Sykes, Director of Tourism for NWDA said: “I’m delighted that these developments are now ready to go ahead. Liverpool’s appeal as a major international tourism destination is firmly rooted in its cultural offer. A new Everyman Theatre will ensure that tourism to the city continues to flourish.”

Work on the project is expected to start in July.
