North West companies spinning gold from 2012

CLOSE to 100 companies across the region have now won work for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The total number of games related contracts won by North West companies stands at to 98, with 42 of those winning contracts directly from the Olympic Delivery Authority, and the remainder winning contracts further down the supply chain.

North West companies working directly with the ODA include Korec Survey Supplies from Liverpool, which supplied GPS measurement tools for the Olympic Park, and Preston-based Pindar Graphics, which produced ‘travel to work’ maps for the Olympic Park workforce.

But John Armitt, chairman of the ODA said there was still time for other businesses from the region to get involved and win contracts.

He said: “Direct contracts are the tip of the iceberg and there are still golden opportunities up for grabs through the UK-wide supply chains. Companies should sign up to our business dating agency – CompeteFor, to be part of a unique opportunity to showcase UK plc to the world.”

Mark Hughes, executive director of economic development at the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said: “At the agency, we’re working hard to ensure our businesses are equipped to compete for a slice of the action, and these latest figures are evidence that that the London 2012 Games are helping to secure and safeguard North West jobs. In the current economic climate, this has never been more important.”
