CSL expands into London

SOFA retailer CSL will begin its push into the South East later this month when it opens a new store at the Brent Cross shopping park in North West London – its first outside the North and Midlands.

The Wigan-based retailer, which currently owns 18 stores and has a turnover of £62m, also said that it is planning two other stores at flagship sites in the South East within the next six months as part of its plan to open 15 new stores by 2015.

The family-owned firm said that like-for-like sales in the nine weeks to June 26 had increased by 6%.

Managing director Jason Tyldesley said: “Our new Brent store marks an important milestone for CSL, as we expand our brand nationally and invest in our store portfolio across prime retail locations.

“We’re confident of securing further growth in market share over the coming years as we scale up the business in the South East and continue to introduce new innovations to our service and product range across our stores.

“Recent trading has been very encouraging. From a broadly flat first quarter, sales over the second quarter have continued to rise, with all stores recording an increase in like-for-likes. While there clearly remains a lot of uncertainty across retail, we’re optimistic that we’ll continue outperforming the sector as more customers buy into our brand.

CSL was founded by husband and wife Brian and Mary Tyldesley in 1984 with a single store in Burnley, Lancashire. The company has been run by their 38 year-old son Jason for the last 10 years and now employs more than 600 people.
