Olympic torch fails to shine in region

A SURVEY has exposed little positivity from businesses in this region for next year’s London Olympics.
A poll by Lloyds Banking Group of more than 100 firms in the North West reveals that 73% don’t feel they have anything to gain from the global sporting event, while a 63% don’t think the North West will benefit either.
On a more positive note, 17% do expect growth to be boosted by the Games, and many (72%) believe the national economy will benefit.
Lloyds, believes the Olympics could generate nearly £3bn for SMEs nationally and says it is not too late for firms from the North West to get involved.
John Robson, regional director for Lloyds TSB Commercial in the Midlands and North, said: “London 2012 is an incredible opportunity for North West businesses. But it’s all in the preparation.
“It is not too late to bid for remaining contract opportunities and with a bit of lateral thinking and planning, businesses can really benefit from the economic impact of London 2012. Either through new products and services, or taking advantage of the great prospects for the leisure sector from the national Olympic Torch Relay and live sites, the opportunities are already enormous.”
The bank has produced a free guide called Games Time Ready, which includes advice to help businesses understand the various opportunities and impacts. It is available at www.lloydsbankcorporatemarkets.com/london2012
