International athletics returning to Manchester

International athletics is set to return to Manchester in August.

The event on Wednesday August 16 at Manchester Regional Arena will see England take on Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & Ulster, a GB & NI Under 20 team as well as a combined British Athletics League/ UK Women’ League team.

Last year the event saw performances including Joel Fearon follow up his 9.96 clocking at the England Athletics senior championships with a 10.00 clocking at Manchester Regional Arena. But as well as excitement in the sprints there were a range of distance events and competitions in the field events.

England Athletics Teams and Competitions Manager, Andy Day, said, “Last year the Manchester International provided a great spectacle for the spectators as well as a tremendous competition opportunity for the athletes involved.

“Last year saw England come out on top in the team competition but we know the opposition will be looking to raise their game. The combined British Athletics League/ UK Women’ League team also gives another group of athletes an opportunity to taste international competition.

“These athletes, including a number from Manchester who enjoyed competing in their local area, made the most of the opportunity presented last year to take second place in the team competition.”

Athletes competing at the UK CAU & England Athletics Senior AAA’s Championships will be putting themselves in the frame for the opportunity to represent their country in this international fixture meaning that once again there will be strong competition for every place on the England team.

The day of the Manchester International will see a Community Athletics Competition taking place during the afternoon with the International meeting taking place in the late afternoon and evening.

The evening will also once again include relay events for young athletes.
