Manchester’s Trafford Centre Barton Square is to get a £75m facelift.

And at the heart of the transformation plans is a brand-new glass-domed roof is being installed at the shopping centre.

Owner intu has appointed VINCI Construction to oversee the £75m transformation of the annex which first opened for business in 2008.

As part of the revamp Primark will be opening a new branch at the shopping centre which lost its Marks and Spencer home store earlier this year.

The space is to get a fully redesigned interior with work due to start later this year.

A number of new brands will join be joining intu Trafford Centre’s popular retail and leisure mix for the first time once the project completes in early 2020, with Primark signed up as an anchor tenant.

Other brands already in place include SEA LIFE Manchester, LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre and Next Home.

“Many of the things that make intu Trafford Centre so special will be extended into the Barton Square area of centre, allowing us to attract quality new brands and provide even more for people to shop, eat, play and do.

“We’re bringing a Primark store to intu Trafford Centre and will be announcing a number of other new retail and leisure operators soon.”

John Roberts, regional director at VINCI Construction UK said: “intu Trafford Centre is already one of the best places to shop in the UK and is known around the world for its unique design and architecture.

“The work we are carrying out at Barton Square will create a fantastic new area befitting this architecturally-rich building.

“The quality of the materials and design will create a space that shoppers will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”

Construction is already well underway on two more of intu’s retail and leisure destinations, with work due to complete on the major developments at intu Watford and intu Lakeside in the next year.

A 400,000 sq ft extension to intu Watford will open in the autumn and intu Lakeside’s £72 million development for incoming leisure brands like Nickelodeon, Hollywood Bowl and new mini-golf operator Puttshack is launching next year.
