Fit-out of £4.5m consultancy centre starts at Didsbury Technology Park

Designs for a recovery room

Work has started on the fit-out of a £4.5m orthopaedic treatment centre at Didsbury Technology Park.

The Orthopaedic Consultation, Diagnostic and Treatment Centre will be operated by OrthTeam and Spire Healthcare.

Designed by Sheppard Robson’s healthcare team and its interior design group ID:SR, it will create 10,000 sq ft of high-quality orthopaedic consultation and diagnostics facilities.

The ‘OrthTeam Centre’ forms part of a pre-let of Bruntwood’s phase 1 research and innovation building, also designed by Sheppard Robson, with the ground floor split equally between consultation and diagnostic facilities and the first floor providing support spaces for clinical and administration staff.

The OrthTeam Centre is served by a dedicated entrance and reception area, which provides access to a suite of consultation and examination rooms to one side, and a diagnostic suite providing ultrasound, digital x-ray, fluoroscopy and MRI facilities to the other, both similarly focused around open, comfortable patient lounge areas.

At first floor, a range of accommodation has been designed to support use by both clinical and administrative staff, centred around an open and flexible staff lounge.

Significantly, equal attention has been paid to the quality of design and finish to the staff support areas, reflecting the importance both Spire and Orthteam say they place on the health and well-being of their staff.

Future flexibility has been incorporated throughout the design enabling changes to be made quickly and easily with minimum physical alteration or disruption to the operation of the facility.

In particular, the diagnostic suite has been designed to facilitate the installation of a second MRI scanner with almost no material change to the accommodation.

The Orthteam Centre will deliver high-quality specialist orthopaedic, spinal, neuro and sports medicine consultations, along with diagnostic and treatment services.

The centre will be working in close partnership with the adjacent Spire Manchester Hospital, allowing both facilities to benefit from each other’s particular skills and resources.

Spire Healthcare appointed Sheppard Robson as lead consultant and architect to develop the detailed architectural, clinical and interior design, from inception to completion.

Ben Tomlins, general manager of The OrthTeam Centre, said: “Our facility will set new standards in private healthcare for the delivery of musculoskeletal services.

“The compelling design and layout will meet the needs of our patients completely, in an environment that supports the provision of clinical excellence from our highly specialist consultants.”

Neil Whatford, associate at Sheppard Robson, said: “The start on site of the OrthTeam Centre is an exciting moment for the Sheppard Robson healthcare team.

“We have worked closely with a wide variety of stakeholders, from both Spire and OrthTeam, over the last 18 months to design a flexible and modern healthcare environment that, at its core, is focused on providing high quality, relaxing, human spaces for patients and staff alike.”

Andrew Cooke, regional director at Bruntwood, said: “Didsbury Technology Park is going to be home to a thriving community of some of the most exciting and disruptive science and technology companies in the UK.

“We are delighted that Spire Healthcare and OrthTeam’s new Orthopaedic Consultation, Diagnostic and Treatment Centre will be at the heart of this dynamic cluster of innovation and collaboration.

“Our contractors are making good progress on the build, with completion due in December, and it’s great to mark the start of the building’s interior fit-out – the installation of these high-quality orthopaedic consultation and diagnostics facilities will breathe life into the building and move us closer to the launch of this regional centre of orthopaedic excellence at the Park.”
