Liverpool property group Signature Living has announced plans to transform Liverpool’s Cavern Walks into a luxury hotel – creating 150 jobs.

The developer behind both the 30 James St and Shankly hotels, has exchanged contracts and now plans to convert part of the iconic building into a thriving hotel and events space.

A large majority of the 80,000 sq ft site – made up of office space, with the exception of retail units – has been empty for more than a decade.

The hotelier’s plans will see the ground floor filled with restaurants and other attractions.

Cavern Walks was once the ultimate shopping destination, and the go-to place for designer clothes in Liverpool.

It was established in the city long before Liverpool One and Metquarter arrived.

Today, there are just 10 shops inside, including Cricket, Boudoir Boutique, Weavers Door and Vivienne Westwood.

The building is seen as a hidden gem, nestled between Matthew Street and Lord Street, but has struggled in recent times.

Now, Signature Living believes a new hotel can help breathe new life into Cavern Walks while redeveloping a famous part of the city.

Signature Living chairman, Lawrence Kenwright, said: “Cavern Walks has a special place in Liverpool’s heart.

“For years it dominated the retail arena that saw visitors travel from all over the UK.

“But, as retail and customer habits changed, the building has struggled to evolve.

“And it’s a real shame that the office space within the building has lain empty for over 10 years, along with empty shops.

“However, with its illustrious Beatles history and unique location, we believe Signature Living’s expertise at giving large buildings a new reason to live again as a luxury hotel, will be integral to not only add many hotel guests to the new Cavern Walks, but also ensuring that the tone of the street is geared to a higher standard.

“This will be the key ingredient to help make it thrive once again – whilst also helping to create new jobs and drive footfall into a part of the city centre which is in need of regeneration.”

Cavern Walks is Signature Living’s 20th acquisition in Liverpool, giving it a total of 1.5 million square foot – which equates to an overall investment of £285m in the city.
