Ex-Big Four tax adviser opens Manchester office of Claritas Tax

Matt Hodgson, until recently an associate partner at EY, has opened the Manchester office of Claritas Tax, a Birmingham-based tax boutique.

Founded in 2012 by Iain Wright, Claritas is a team of 20 highly-experienced tax practitioners with a range of backgrounds including HMRC, industry and practice.

Claritas provide a broad range of tax consultancy services, including all aspects of M&A and transactional taxes, R&D and intellectual property claims, shareholder and corporate reorganisations, demergers, share schemes and share valuations, personal and corporate tax compliance and more.

Claritas recently joined the Andersen Global network, which provides international reach to tax expertise in more than 134 countries, the largest presence being the US.

Hodgson said: “Having spent the last three years of my career in Birmingham I found myself regularly ‘across the table’ from Claritas on deals and other projects and I always came away impressed with the quality of work they were delivering and equally impressed with who they were working with.

“Claritas operate predominantly in the ‘mid-market’, working alongside private equity and other investment houses, small accountants, corporate finance boutiques and lawyers.

“This fits well with my own experience and referral network, but brings the added dimension of being non-competitive, in that we aren’t trying to also sell in audit, corporate finance, legal and other services often associated with traditional accountancy practices.

“In other words, we just focus on what we’re good at.

“I’m naturally very excited to be back in the North West and our intention is to replicate the success Claritas has achieved in the Midlands in as short a time as possible.”

Iain Wright, Claritas Tax founding director, said: “I am delighted that Matt has joined us to grow the Claritas brand in the North West.

“Matt is an incredibly skilled tax adviser, providing great commercial focus and technical expertise to his clients and he has a great passion for working with businesses to find solutions.

“Manchester and the wider North West region is an incredibly dynamic economy and I am very excited that our second office will be based there”.

Claritas is based in Centurion House on Deansgate, Manchester city centre.
