New Salford supermarket to create 50 jobs

Aldi store

A new supermarket is to be built next to the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford.

Around 50 jobs will be created at the new 20,000 sq ft Aldi store.

Planning permission has been approved for the store which will be built on land owned by CosCos, a joint-venture between Peel L&P and Salford City Council.

The store is next to the home of Sale Sharks and Salford Red Devils as well as the Greene King family restaurant, Barley Farm.

David Glover, director at CosCos said: “The arrival of Aldi is the continuation of the exciting regeneration at the AJ Bell Stadium, which is part of our City Gateway destination.

“The Aldi store will increase convenience for local shoppers and visually enhance the overall offer and experience at the AJ Bell Stadium that will also help attract other retail and leisure operators to this location.”

The new store development proposal will also include improved pedestrian access in the area and 115 car parking spaces.

The site is close tp Peel L&P’s £138m Port Salford development, the UK’s first tri-modal inland waterway port, which will bring 154,000 sq metres of distribution warehousing, a new rail link and shipping wharf as well as thousands of jobs.

Stuart Parks, property director at Aldi said: “This site complements our expansion plans in Salford and Trafford, with another new store also planned for across the Manchester Ship Canal at Trafford Retail Park.

“We aim to help the community shop and save closer to home by increasing shopping convenience for both new and existing customers. We look forward to opening the doors of this store in 2020.”
