Key phase celebrated at university’s landmark new development
Morgan Sindall Construction has hosted a milestone event to mark the progress being made at Liverpool John Moores University’s landmark new development in Liverpool city centre
The event saw a topping out ceremony take place at the five-storey Student Life Building, one of two buildings to be built at the former Post Office site on Copperas Hill.
When complete the Student Life Building will provide a range of student-facing services including advice and wellbeing services, careers advice, international exchanges, an area for individual and group study, the Students’ Union (JMSU), and general teaching spaces.
Officers from the Students’ Union took part in the ceremony, which saw representatives from both organisations celebrate the Student Life Building reach the highest point of its construction.
Work is also under way at the Sports Building, a new two-storey building with outstanding facilities such as an eight-court sports hall, two multi-purpose halls and a state-of-the-art gym.
The three-and-a-half-acre development will regenerate a historic part of Liverpool and a key gateway site in the heart of the city centre. The project is set to complete in 2020.
Morgan Sindall Construction is also completing work elsewhere in the city, with numerous projects under way at Paddington Village within the city’s Knowledge Quarter.

LJMU’s interim vice-chancellor and chief executive, Mark Power, said: “I’m delighted to see the fantastic progress being made by Morgan Sindall Construction on our landmark Copperas Hill development.
“Our superb new Student Life Building and Sport Building will offer outstanding facilities and really enhance the university experience for students at LJMU and will link our campuses in the city centre.
“The development is bringing wider benefits to the city by regenerating a key gateway site and creating attractive open spaces.”
The project was procured through the Pagabo Major Works framework.
