Work set to start on housing scheme at former school

Work is set to start on a housing development on a former grammar school site in Stockport.

P4 Planning has secured outline planning approval for the housing development in Cheadle Hulme with work due to start on site in in late spring.

Acting on behalf of joint applicants, Seddon Developments and PH Property Holdings, P4 submitted the application for a new residential scheme.

Plans have now been approved for 37 new homes to be built on the site of the former Hulme Hall Grammar School, which has already moved to new premises.

Now that plans have been approved by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, it is hoped the new housing development will transform the 1.6ha brownfield site.

The application follows a community consultation which saw overwhelming support in favour of the proposals with almost a third of attendees at the public exhibitions registering an interest in buying a property.

Charlotte Fowler, associate at P4 Planning, said: “This site has been vacant for some time and some of the old school buildings have been a focus for anti-social behaviour, so it is great to achieve such a quick decision and know that work can now commence to transform it into a vibrant new community.”

James Heyworth, Land Director at PH Property Holdings said: “Due to the nature of this site the planning process has been quite a demanding one.

“This decision means we are now in a great position to progress quickly and deliver our plans for the scheme.”

Plans include the demolition of the old school buildings, which sit within a conservation area, and designs for the new scheme are heavily influenced by existing landscaping and the surrounding residential environment.

The professional team includes P4 Planning, Barnes Walker Landscape Architects, SK Transport Planning, Orion Heritage, Cheshire Woodlands and Dave Gowen Design.
