Developer secures go-ahead for final phase of homes at former Vulcan Works

St Modwen Homes, the dedicated housebuilding arm of developer St Modwen, has secured planning approval from St Helens Council for 89 homes as part of the fourth and final phase of its Tayleur Leas development in Newton-le-Willows.

A comprehensive mix of two-, three- and four-bed dwellings will be built in the housebuilder’s signature contemporary style – with tall windows and high ceilings – on a 5.5-acre site to the east of Wargrave Road.

The scheme is part of the wider 630-home outline planning application that was submitted in 2003 on the site of the former Vulcan Works factory.

Cllr Richard McCauley, St Helens Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and housing, said: “I’m delighted to see this application granted which will bring more quality housing to the fittingly named Vulcan Village, once home to Vulcan Works, which was one of the biggest locomotive manufacturers and exporters in the world.

“The council is committed to delivering its brownfield-first approach to housing, and developments like this are fine examples of our intentions as we look to make St Helens Borough an attractive place to live, work and visit.”

St Modwen Homes is currently proceeding with construction on the thirrd phase and will move on to the fourth phase with a new sales arena and showhomes soon.
