Plans submitted to transform Kendals building

Plans for the former Kendals building on Deansgate

Plans to convert the Kendals building in Manchester city centre into 500,000 sq ft of offices have been submitted for approval.

The landmark Grade II-listed building on Deansgate would be revived and extended to replace the multi-storey car park behind it.

Retail and leisure space on the ground and lower ground floors are also part of the plans.

Mickey Nurtman, from Investec, which owns the building, said: “This is a major investment in the city of Manchester – it will create and retain jobs, and contribute to the region’s post-Covid economic recovery.”

It is estimated that if built and when fully occupied the scheme could support almost 4,000 jobs and generate more than £300m for the local economy every year.

If the plans are approved in the spring, work is expected to begin in early 2022.

Nurtman added: “We are proud to be leading on a scheme that protects and celebrates an iconic building like Kendals, ensuring it remains a focal point of Deansgate for many years to come.

“Our plans also contribute to the Council’s vision for a zero-carbon city centre with fewer cars and more attractive public realm.”

The project team includes MHBC Cumming, Deloitte, Cundall, Sheppard Robson, LAYER, Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture, Fairhurst, and OBI Property.
