Plans for a 215,000 sq ft new office scheme in the heart of Blackpool have been given the go-ahead.

Around 2.500 civil service workers are expected to occupy the building which will be developed by the council’s investment partner Muse as part of the third phase of the Talbot Gateway regeneration scheme.

The seven-storey civil service hub would be constructed on a 2.4-acre site bounded by Deansgate, King Street, Cookson Street, Charles Street and East Topping Street.

A planning application was submitted in December for the development which also includes a health centre.

The locally listed Hop Inn would be partially bulldozed in order to save the front facade of the former pub, with the remainder of the site converted to a dental surgery.

Phase two of the Talbot Gateway is currently underway with work to build a new Holiday Inn hotel and tram terminal on Talbot Road now beginning following the demolition of Wilko’s.

Planning committee chairman Coun David Owen said: “This is a major milestone in the council’s aim to try to improve the employment prospects of our citizens.”

The northern seaside town has been undergoing a series of transformations over the years.

Most recently, Blackpool council formally signed the terms of the £39.5m Town Deal which will provide a huge boost to the town’s regeneration and post-COVID economic recovery.
