The Pilcrow in Manchester city centre shuts its doors

A craft beer pub based at Sadler’s Yard development in Manchester city centre has closed after five years.

The Pilcrow Pub, which was run by Common and Co – the team behind Common, Port Street Beer House and The Beagle – in partnership with Piccadilly-based Cloudwater Brewery, decided to shut after a difficult year and ongoing uncertainty within the hospitality sector.

The pub was built with the help of 500 volunteers within the NOMA development.

In a statement on its website, it said: “We’ve had 5 incredible years at The Pilcrow, but our role in the stewardship of the pub that Manchester built has come to an end.

“From the moment we and our friends at Cloudwater first opened the doors to this beautiful little building, it has been a real joy to play a part in crafting a community around Sadler’s Yard.

“There were over 500 volunteers that contributed to its construction, furbishment, and launch, and we’d like to think that we’ve honoured the work put in by those people during our time in charge.

“There have been many highlights – our annual festival, Summer Beer Thing, maybe being the one that stands out most in the memory.

“Our only regret is that we’ve been unable to see out our term in a manner befitting such a unique boozer due to circumstances we’ve all been subject to this past year.”

Common & Co said its energy will now be poured into the opening of a new pub, Cornerstone, and a Nell’s Pizza shop, at Kampus, the £250m garden neighbourhood being developed by Capital & Centric and HBD.

The statement added: “With a new site of our own (Cornerstone) launching a few short months, and our teams already operating at capacity at Common, Port Street Beer House, The Beagle, and in our Nell’s Pizza kitchens, we could find no way in which we could invest the amount of time and money that would be needed to re-open The Pilcrow in way that matched the building’s ethos before our lease was due to come to an end in September 2021.”
